This thread closed to avoid confusion. The no-nudity rule was only temporary due to specific direction from Ning. The site has been reverted to its previous rule allowing nudity but not porn. Please see the announcement thread here
A follow up to this week's porn-ad crisis (see previous thread)
As you can see we were able to get the site re-evaluated by Ning (YAY!). The 18+ splash has been removed and the porn ads have been replaced with standard text ads.
Until we can fully resolve this issue a new site rule has been applied, effective immediately: no nudity on the site of any kind, no exceptions. This is explained more below and outlined in the
site rules. We will be addressing this issue in 3 phases.
ETA, 10/15 2:40pm: I wanted to stress that we're considering the current no-nudity rule a temporary situation, put in place only to allow us to keep the network usable by all members while we discuss the matter further with Ning.
I'd also like to ask that members keep things in perspective: all we're asking is that you refrain from posting images with nudity until this can be resolved. That's a pretty small thing and we think members can still use the site unencumbered, just don't post nudity. All of your other posting can go on as usual, provided you abide by the other site rules.
PHASE 1: (completed)
Yesterday's mass deletion of content containing nudity or "adult" material was
phase 1 of solving this issue. It was simply a
temporary solution to get the porn ads removed from the site to make it usable for all members. It was an unpleasant task for all. We
hope that once this matter has been clarified with Ning members will be able to repost the majority of that deleted content and return to their previous posting freedom for the most part without the threat of porn bombardment.
PHASE 2: update 10/18: completed
Now that regular status has been returned we move on to
phase 2 of solving this issue: discussions with Ning. We have many questions to sort out with Ning about the nudity = porn rule which were left unanswered or were evaded during my exchanges with the Ning Admins the past week. The definitions of what constitutes adult material, as well as what content specifically triggers the porn ads are the primary things that need to be clarified for us. Myself and the other site Admins will be dealing with this over the next week.
PHASE 3: update 10/18: in progress
Once we complete our discussions with Ning we move to
phase 3: noting our options and discussing them with the member base, including how it may effect the future of the site. This will allow us to provide more accurate information with members about the situation and a clearer understanding of what steps can be taken to give members freedom to post comfortably, while still keeping the site porn-free.
NEW SITE RULE:
To prevent further problems while we negotiate with Ning a new site rule in in place, EFFECTIVE IMMEDIATELY:
no nudity on the site of any kind, in any form, in any context.
NO WARNINGS, IMMEDIATE BANNING FOR VIOLATION.
This rule will remain in effect until we can get clarity from Ning on what is and is not considered "adu1t" and triggers the porn-only ads. The
site rules have been updated and supply more info on this.
To be clear, this rule is simply to prevent further complications in an already confusing matter and keep the site porn-free, as members prefer. It is merely a tool to allow us smooth resolution with Ning. It is not in any way a moral judgment regarding content.
Thank you for your cooperation and patience. We hope to have this resolved soon so that members can continue using the site with ease.
