Tribe Refugees

because donuts make us sad. wow, 1000 members!

This network is hosted by Ning.com. Ning shares several similar features as Tribe, PLUS some bonus features that Tribe doesn't offer. These are described below. :)

TABLE OF CONTENTS:

TRIBES

create tribes

While Tribe.net has "tribes", Ning has "Groups". Groups are subdivisions of this site, specialized discussion groups. And like tribes, each Group has its own mini-forum. You can use the Groups feature to re-create your favorite tribes.
Check out the Groups page in this network to see what tribe-like Groups members have made.

* * NING BONUS * *:
  • More Than Just Description: In addition to the Group description box, you have a catch-all box on each Group home page where you can embed pics, video, or widgets; add links; post news; or just give more info about the Group. See the Burn Bright Group for an example.

private tribes

Like Tribe.net's tribes, Ning allows you designate your Group as private, with membership being either upon request or by invite only.

view all tribes with one profile

On Ning you can view all the Groups within a single network using the one profile for that network. Your Tribe Refugees profile allows you to view all Groups in this network.

NOTE:
Ning itself is composed of many networks (sites) and each of those sites has its own specific Groups. Each network's Groups belong only to that network. So if you want to participate in the Groups of another network (site) you will need to join and create a separate profile for that network.

invite friends to tribes

Like Tribe.net, Ning allows you to invite people to join your Group, whether they're a friend, a fellow member, or someone outside the network.

photo albums for tribes

While Ning doesn't offer a photo album nested in the Groups themselves, it's easy to make a photo album for a Group. That photo album can then be linked to on the Group's home page.
Example:

* * NING BONUS * *:
  • Multiple Albums: Unlike Tribe, you can have more than one photo album for your Group, and link to each on your home page.
  • Multiple View Options:You can view the Group's album in multiple ways:
  • Embed Slideshows: Ning offers the ability to embed a small or large slideshow of the album on another web page (like your profile or MySpace page) by copying the code from the sidebar on the album's home page. See the Burn Bright Group for an example of an embedded album.
  • Different Image SIzes: Ning stores several different sizes of your image, all of which can be viewed by clicking the All Sizes button next to each image. Check out this image for an example.
